At the start of March, Rochelle and I were all set for a four-night escape
to Malta—a place neither of us had ever explored before. The plan was
simple: a 2:30 AM departure from home to catch a 7 AM flight from
Manchester Airport. With plenty of time to spare, everything seemed
smooth sailing… until it wasn’t.

Just 30 minutes away from the airport, the car suddenly began to lose
acceleration. I shifted gears, hoping for a quick fix, but nothing worked.
Then came the unmistakable smell of burning, followed by smoke
billowing from the bonnet. Still, we weren’t panicking just yet—surely it
was just overheating, right?

We pulled over, gave it 30 minutes to cool down, and tried everything
we could to get moving again. But as the minutes ticked by, it became
painfully clear we weren’t going anywhere. With 7 AM creeping closer
and closer, we finally called the RAC. By the time they arrived, our flight
had already taken off without us.

What followed was a cascade of frustrations. Manchester Airport refused to refund the unused car park
booking, EasyJet’s next available flight wasn’t until the next evening, and to top it off, our travel
insurance—meant to protect us in moments like this—was doing everything possible to avoid paying out
for the missed flight.

If there’s one silver lining to this chaotic morning, it’s the RAC team who came to our rescue. They were
brilliant, towing us back home and saving us from being stranded. But the lesson here? Always
double-check your travel insurance and make sure it covers every scenario. For now, the dream of Malta
remains just that—a dream. - Here’s hoping our next adventure actually takes off!
